How to Comment in Reports

Why use comments? Comments in Contour BI make it possible for users to add notes to clarify data or share information and ideas on a given subject. Other users can then respond and be seen by authorized users. 

Comments can be added by analysts to explain underlying causes and reasons for changes, trends, and so forth in the charts.Comments can also be used as reminders or simply to share impressions.

Collaboration is important in any business, and the online discussion of information published in a corporate dashboard can facilitate a company's team building and knowledge sharing.

How to Use Comments?

In Contour BI, comments can be added when users have logged in and been granted permissions by the admin to comment on certain objects.

It is a good idea first to set some appearance properties for the comment area such as the font color, if the comments will appear when the report is exported, etc.
These are defined using the Contour Reporter in the project’s style sheet WebOptions property.

By default, the current date and user name appear in the comment box. To hide those values check the options in the comment properties.

Write my First Comment

To write a comment, log into the BI Portal and open a report. For each view of the report it is possible to write notes.

  1. Select the object – for example, a Grid
  2. In its toolbar, find the Comment button
  3. When you click this button, a floating panel box appears. Type the text and press the Save button
  4. Depending on the settings, the comments appear on top or bottom of the view panel. By default, they appear on top.

How to Reply to Messages?

To reply to messages, simply click over the comment text and the Reply option appears:

Click on the option and write your reply in the same way you write a comment. It immediately becomes visible in the comment area. In the figure, the menu displays the Reply option, the only operation allowed in response to the messages of another user.

Edit or Delete Comments

Text messages written by the author can be edited or deleted by him/herself.

  1. To reply to messages, simply click over the comment text and the Reply option appears

    1. From the comment panel, click over the message text that you want to edit or delete.
    2. A menu option is displayed
    3. Select the option from the list. Changes are immediately visible in the comment panel.
